I am a man of France - to you, perhaps, yes; but to myself, I am a man of the Languedoc. You Germans know so little of our country - but we were a country, our own land once, and our own people we remain. Besides - I like to imagine myself a man who has more brains in his head than bone, and I do not believe in fighting losing battles, no? France, pah - who could be proud of a nation who truly believed the Maginot Line would work, anyway? An invasion through Belgium? Oh, they've never done that before.

Background

Espionage sort of runs in the family, you could say. His uncle was a spy in the Great War; he's a cousin in the Foreign Legion - although these relations wouldn't show up in an examination of his family tree. One doesn't brag about one's experiences in that line, n'est-ce pas?
Marie-Pierre himself was raised in the south of France, near Toulouse, and apprenticed with the village butcher as a youth (experience which has no doubt been useful to him as an adult - a firm understanding of anatomy cannot be overappreciated). He attended university at Paris, participated in and was relatively briefly jailed in conjunction with a movement for Occitan independence, and subsequently spent a couple of years in England before branching out into work across the continent.
He has attached himself to the German occupying army as a sort of liaison, possessing a technical rank in the Gestapo as a matter of convenience, and has made useful contacts - though whether they are intended to be useful to the Germans or merely to himself could be questioned - with Resistance members where he has travelled.
Each side he has carefully led to believe they hold his true loyalties: to the Germans he is almost a mercenary - loyal first to the Languedoc, second to the side he believes will win the war, and not at all to France, the oppressors of his independently-minded homeland; to the Resistance he is a counteragent - working from within the Nazi regime to liberate France. To himself - he is Marie-Pierre Duclos, a man who enjoys playing dangerous games.

Skills/Abilities

He speaks French, the langue d'oc (a dialect also known in America as Occitan or Provencal, which is the modern descendant of the old language known as Catalan - a Romance tongue with close ties to French, Spanish and Italian), Castilian Spanish, German, and English proficiently - although he'll often exaggerate his accents when speaking anything other than French or Occitan, to make others underestimate his linguistic abilities; he is very good at knife-work.

Personality

He is basically a sarcastic bastard; jaded, prone to black humour and to tease even those he actually likes (and there are few enough of those). However, he's good at playing the charmer - a necessity in his occupation, no? - perhaps too good; though he never loses himself in the passion he's willing to act out.

Appearance

Dark, slender, and quiet, with a particularly sardonic way of raising his eyebrows.
